Question 1

What is Shadow?

Accepted Answer

Shadow is an AI meeting assistant for Mac that captures what's said and shown in any call without joining as a bot. It starts and stops with your calls on its own, transcribes on your Mac, keeps every meeting as Markdown you own with no history limit, and runs Meeting Skills on it. Between calls, Action Skills run AI on your screen, voice or selected text from a shortcut.

Question 2

What's a Skill?

Accepted Answer

A Skill is a prompt paired with what Shadow captures (voice, screen, selected text) and where the result goes (paste at the cursor, an overlay, a folder or a webhook). Every built-in Skill is yours to edit, and you can write new ones from scratch.

Question 3

What's the difference between Meeting Skills and Action Skills?

Accepted Answer

Meeting Skills run when a call ends and turn the transcript and screen captures into meeting notes, BANT breakdowns, follow-up emails or anything else you can describe in a prompt. Action Skills run on demand anywhere on your Mac from a keyboard shortcut, for voice typing, quick replies or any task that uses what's on your screen and what you say.

Question 4

How is Shadow different from Granola, Otter.ai, Fireflies or Fathom?

Accepted Answer

Many meeting tools now record without a bot, so the difference is what happens to your meetings afterwards. Shadow starts and stops with your calls on its own, transcribes on your Mac, keeps every meeting as Markdown files you own with no history limit on any plan, and lets your AI agents read them without a connector. It also captures what's shown on screen, not just what's said, and its Action Skills work everywhere else on your Mac.

Question 5

Can my AI agents read my meetings?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your vault is plain Markdown in a folder on your Mac, with a SHADOW.md guide that explains the layout to agents. Point Claude Code, Codex or Cursor at it. No connector or API key is needed.

Question 6

What happens to my meetings if I stop paying?

Accepted Answer

They stay. Recording and transcription are free forever, every meeting is a file on your Mac, and AI notes you already made stay readable. Plus unlocks new AI notes, Skills and Ask.

Question 7

What platforms does Shadow run on?

Accepted Answer

Shadow runs on Macs with Apple Silicon and macOS 14.2 or later. Other platforms are on the roadmap.

Question 8

What languages are supported?

Accepted Answer

Shadow supports around 100 languages and works best in English.

Question 9

Is my data private?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Shadow transcribes your meetings on your Mac, so no audio leaves it for transcription, and your meetings are stored locally. Skills send the context they need to an AI model when they run, and you can turn them off to keep everything local.

Question 10

Does Shadow use my data to train AI?

Accepted Answer

No. Shadow never uses your meeting content or Skill outputs for AI model training. Your conversations are yours.

Question 11

Do I need the consent of others when letting Shadow listen to a conversation?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Shadow strongly recommends asking everyone in the conversation for permission. Learn more in Use Shadow Safely.

Question 12

Do you sync across multiple devices?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Keep your vault in iCloud Drive or Google Drive and open it from each Mac, signed in to the same account or different ones.
